Bachelors Programmes

Overview

Bachelors ProgrammesA Bachelor’s programme is the first stage of higher education abroad. The duration of studies is 3-4 years. It depends, first of all, on the country, then on the university and chosen programme. For example, the duration of a Bachelor’s programme in Western Europe is 4 years. Though there are some exceptions – bachelor’s studies in the UK take only 3 years.

Bachelor’s studies require an important decision about a major. Perspective students are usually school graduates who have received their general education and haven’t yet gained in-depth specialist knowledge. Overseas Bachelors programmes allow students to obtain, over a few years, deeper knowledge on their selected subject.

Features

You will not be required to take lots of different subjects on general topics. During the first year the general topics will be closely related to a selected major. From the very first year on a Bachelor’s programme students will be required to take specialized subjects. Every subsequent year the number of topics increases, providing students with a deeper knowledge.

One other distinctive feature of Bachelors qualifications overseas is the number of courses per year. If you look through a course list you will not notice as many as 20 subjects on offer, as in CIS countries. Instead the amount of courses will be twice fewer. This allows students to concentrate on a subject and receive a more profound experience.

That is why universities overseas have two different types of study arrangements:

Module System

Each subject is taught approximately 6 weeks. During this time students study only one discipline. They complete group tasks, tests and a final exam. After the period of 6 weeks they began to study the next subject.

Advantages of this system – students receive in depth understanding of a subject based on “fresh knowledge”.

Semester System

There is a list of courses, usually 4-6, that students study during one semester which lasts 4 months. Classes on this subject take place once (a complete day) or a few times a week.

Advantages of this system – students can compare few subjects and has a whole semester to complete the course.

According to the fact that Bachelors programmes abroad are aimed at school graduates, the university goal is to introduce them to a specialised area. That is why as part of every course participation in study trips, competitions and internships gives students opportunities for a broader experience. Career

Graduates possess not only general knowledge from high school but also field related expertise. This allows the young professional to progress their career in their selected industry. This is a very popular strategy among graduates overseas. You often meet professionals in business, IT or other industries who received only a Bachelor’s degree. Many international companies design programmes for talented graduates. Their strategy may be to employ a Bachelor’s degree graduate to shape and bring them along in the team. Such programmes usually last for 1-2 years. After completion an evaluation will take place and the company may then make a final decision about employment.

Another option is to continue your studies by progressing to Master’s level. This often occurs if a student aims to increase specialist knowledge, transfer to another field or to develop an academic career. You can receive more information about Masters programmes following this link.
